What's Your Firm's BIM Score?
Please note: since this webinar first aired in October of 2011, we have developed a new version of the BIM Score -- an online quiz which grades your capabilities across seven aspects of construction management. Feel free to still watch this archived webinar to understand the background material, but also take advantage of BIM Score Version 2.0!
There’s a debate going on in the AEC/O Community about BIM. Some question whether we’ve run the Hype Cycle on the topic and we’ve gone as far as we can go. Along that same vein, the question pops up, “Is BIM stalled?”
If you were to look at Vico’s new customer roster, you’d be hard pressed to reach the conclusion that BIM is stalled. Quite the opposite, you’d see that more and more GCs are pushing BIM farther; farther past traditional clash detection and out into 4D scheduling and production control and 5D cost planning and budget tracking.
The current research on the topic from the McGraw-Hill BIM SmartMarket Report is that 49% of GCs have tried some flavor of BIM on at least one project. We like that number. That means about half the construction industry has not tried BIM; about one-quarter are proficient with modeling and clash detection; and about one-quarter are pushing the envelope.
But where is your firm along the spectrum? If each GC firm wore their BIM Score on a jersey, what would yours say?
Join Team Vico for the next Fridays with Vico webinar where we dive head first into this topic. Is there a way to determine where you stand on the BIM spectrum and what is available to you to move the needle dramatically to the right?
You will need this special BIM Scorecard during the webinar, so download it now. Each section of the webinar will help you determine how to grade your firm, so the two pieces, the BIM Scorecard and the Webinar, go hand-in-hand.
Vico has designed an interactive questionnaire to weight the specific priorities of your firm. Each person joining the webinar will receive this questionnaire in advance and we’ll spend the hour discussing how to complete it. The weighting system examines your current solution (or lack of solution) against the Vico Office solution and our extensive collection of industry best practices.
We’ll walk through the worksheet together by asking questions about how your firm stacks up along the following categories:
Cost Planning. Is your estimate integrated with your schedule or are they independent of one another? Are you able to organize cost ranges for your projects and simulate what-ifs? How quickly can you build a conceptual estimate and pull in past project data? Is your current solution as easy to use as Excel? Are your quantities tied to the BIM model geometry? What type of visual feedback and reporting do you offer the Owner?
Schedule Planning. Does your current solution espouse quantity-driven durations – or does the Owner need date determine the schedule? Do you cost-load your schedule for cash flow analysis? Do you produce helpful reports for the crews?
Procurement Planning. When you generate a task based on the quantities, do you create a related procurement task for the material, labor, and equipment needed for that on-site task? How do you currently compare Subs’ bids?
Coordination. Your clash detection solution handles geometry clashes, but do you also consider scheduling clashes? What about missing a change in a drawing? Are you using a Structure-Priority-System to resolve one trade at a time – or does each fix ripple into new downstream clashes? What layouting options do you utilize now? Are they tied to the BIM model geometry? How do you check if the layout is correct? What about precise measurements for MEP bracing?
Cost Control. How closely are you monitoring variances? Are you including interest calculations? Is you cost plan updated automatically when the scheduled tasks are completed?
Production Control. How do you currently visualize the progress made on-site. How often do you perform a deviation analysis to determine how to fix a break in the schedule? Does your schedule automatically tell you when a trade is a behind or moving too fast? How do you communicate this information to the subs? Does your schedule application help you forecast future delays in the project based on actual progress? How easy is it to reflect the current status of the project using the schedule?
Procurement Control. How do you currently manage the procurement task progress? How is it tied in contract management and even budgeting? How are you managing the deliveries on-site and their consumption?
Site Management. How do you manage crew size with regards to safety regulations – and how is that tied back to the schedule?
Change Management. With BIM models powering these operations, how do you manage all the different versions of models coming into the project? How do you compare two versions of the same model and what are the schedule and budget implications of those changes? How do your firm handle change orders and is the workflow efficient? Are you certain that you've found every change in the latest set of drawings?
We’ll work with you on this interactive webinar to help you complete this questionnaire. The calculations just might surprise you! Are you leading the pack? Is there an area that could be improved? And what would be different if the pieces were tightly integrated?
Find out your team’s BIM Score on the next Fridays with Vico! And then get ready for some serious bragging rights.

Caption: There is so much more to BIM than 3D models and clash detection. Understand the range of BIM capabilities, including change management, scheduling, estimating, production control, and reporting, and grade your firm's capabilities. And then use the BIM Scorecard to grade your competitor. Is it time to move the needle?
