There are three pieces to the Vico Office installation process: the Vico Office Client (the backbone), the Vico Office Database (the heart), and the Vico Office Modules (the arms and legs).
This diagram illustrates how these pieces can be combined in either a single-user or floating scenario.

Before installing any software on your machine, it is important to note: the logged in user has to have Administrator Rights on his/her computer. Running the installer with standard User Rights does not allow you proper access.
There are two (2) license types for the Vico Office Suite: single user license (SUL) and floating.
Let’s look at options for the single user license first. There are two options for the database location: local or remote.
- SUL, local database
a. Vico Office and Versant database are installed on the user’s computer (default VO
installation)
b. “Vico Office Client” license and Vico Office module licenses (Vico Office Takeoff
Manager, Vico Office Cost Planner, Vico Office LBS Manager, etc. are installed
on the user’s computer. All licenses are SUL – single user licenses.
- SUL, remote database server
a. Vico Office is installed on the user’s computer (you can have the Vico Database
(Versant) as well on the user’s computer, the connection to the database server is
set in Vico Office)
b. Versant database is installed on a server – Vico Office Server-Only install
(Database Server)
c. Database server does not require a license
d. “Vico Office Client” license and Vico Office module licenses (Vico Office
Takeoff Manager, Vico Office Cost Planner, Vico Office LBS Manager, etc.)
are installed on the client machine.
All licenses are single user licenses.
You can see the two options illustrated in the diagram below.

Floating licenses scenarios also have two options for the database server: remote or local.
- Floating license; local database
a. Vico Office and Versant database are installed on the user’s computer (default
Vico Office installation)
b. “Vico Office Client” license is installed on the user’s computer
c. Vico License Server is installed on a server (License Server)
d. Client License Utility is installed on the user’s computer (and the connection is set
to the License Server)
e. Floating Vico Office module licenses (Vico Office Takeoff Manager, Vico Office
Cost Planner, Vico Office LBS Manager, etc.) are installed on the License Server
- Floating license; remote database server
a. Vico Office is installed on the user’s computer (you can have Versant as well on
the user’s computer, the connection to the database server is set in Vico Office)
b. Versant database is installed on a server – Vico Office Server-Only install
(Database Server)
c. Database server does not require a license
d. Vico License Server is installed on a server (License Server)
e. Database server and License server can be one system
f. “Vico Office Client” license is installed on the client machine
g. Client License Utility is installed on the client machine (and the connection is set to
the License Server)
h. Floating VO module licenses (Vico Office Takeoff Manager, Vico Office Cost
Planner, Vico Office LBS Manager, etc.) are installed on the License Server.
It’s important to remember that even though we say “floating,” each and every user of Vico Office must have their own single user license of the Vico Office Client. The floating environment relies on Vico Office Client for all model publishing, importing, and reporting.
Each user who would like to access the other Vico Office Floating Modules on the network will need to have the Vico Office Client installed locally on their machine. As the user accesses specific modules, s/he “checks out the licenses” for those modules.
Typical customers want their users to be able to access Vico Office on 50 computers throughout the organization, so they will need 50 Vico Office Clients. If they only want 10 people at a time to use the floating modules on the network, then they will need 10 floating licenses for that particular module (Vico Office Constructability Manager, Vico Office Takeoff Manager, Vico Office Cost Planner, Vico Office Cost Explorer, Vico Office LBS Manager, etc.). Regardless of how many users, any desktop that wants to access the Vico Office modules needs one single user license of Vico Office Client. (see diagram below)
So as you can see, aligning the backbone (Vico Office Client), heart (database), and arms and legs (modules), makes a complete installation.
