Using the Model Progression Specification

BIM models are becoming more and more prevalent in commercial and institutional construction as Owners expect the latest technology to be used for their projects. But models can come from different sources (architects, engineers, GCs, and subs) and be authored by different software (ArchiCAD, Bentley, Revit, Tekla, and even SketchUp).

Who is responsible for harnessing these models and modelers? How do we ensure that each model is useful? We need more “I” in BIM, so how do we organize these activities before-during-and-after the project?

This Fridays with Vico webinar explores the basic how-to’s for the Model Progression Specification. The MPS was pioneered by Vico and Webcor, refined by the technology subcommittee of the AIA California Council’s IPD Task Force, and was adopted by the AIA in late 2008. It is also known as the AIA E202. The MPS is a systematic approach to developing multiple models so that the information contained in each is relevant for visualization, coordination, cost planning, scheduling, production control, fabrication, and even facilities management.

This webinar is important for your team if:

Put very simply, the Model Progression Specification is a language for owners, designers and builders that defines every element and task in a building construction process. Using the MPS the owner can standardize RFP’s, budget reviews, and ensure that estimates of cost from conceptual to GMP are all consistent throughout the project team members.

The MPS methodology provides transparency for the owner, along with a control system over the design, cost, and schedule. The Contractor receives streamlined internal processes and meaningful communication between the office and the field. The Architect receives a clean guideline of expectations which they can use to develop the design.

The MPS defines the interaction between the Owner, Designer and Preconstruction Team as they migrate from the initial idea through the conceptual phase, on to the schematic, detail, and construction phases of a program. It provides the framework for an efficient written checklist evolving elements of the design from a very schematic level of detail to a high level of detail in terms of 3D geometry, cost, and time.
