The CIO’s Role in the BIM Strategy
Like many industries, construction is divided into silos: business development, preconstruction teams, estimators, schedulers, and operations or field teams. Connecting these silos to the 5D BIM harnesses the construction means and methods knowledge contained throughout the CM/GC firm. Construction CIOs are increasingly asked to provide integration to make the firm’s BIM strategy pervasive, persistent, and profitable.
There are three very interesting technologies and methodologies emerging to create even more connections between the silos: the Vico MPS (model progression specification), the agcXML, and virtualization.
Join us as we dive in to these technology topics and how they impact enterprise-level BIM. The end result is a coordinated project data set revolving around a model which feeds quantities to the team. Those detailed quantities feed cost estimates, and the line items in an estimate feed the project schedule. Superintendents and subcontractors are brought into this collaborative process to assess and plan proper crew and resource sizing to produce a complete project plan where all stakeholders own the plan and are committed to a consistent set of outcomes. Everything from material and labor cost to task durations are derived from this information model and kept up to date as inevitable changes occur.

Participants will learn about this integrated BIM strategy for the enterprise, as well as dive into the new technologies and hear practical use cases and customer anecdotes.
Model Progression Specification The MPS defines the interaction between the Owner, Designer, and Preconstruction Team as they migrate from the initial idea through the conceptual phase, on to the schematic, detail, and construction phases of a program. It provides the framework for an efficient written checklist evolving elements of the design from a very schematic level of detail to a high level of detail in terms of 3D geometry, cost, and time.
agcXML is a set of eXtensible Markup Language (XML) schemas designed to automate and streamline the exchange of information during the building design and construction process. agcXML facilitates the electronic exchange between different software programs of typical business information that is otherwise exchanged in unstructured construction documents. We will discuss how RFI and Change Order details can be shared between project team stakeholders, quickly comparing the cost and schedule impact from different design and construction changes.
Virtualization is also an important option for construction CIOs. This option allows inexpensive desktop or laptop computers to connect to a powerful application server. The connection fee is significantly less expensive than outfitting many project workers with powerful machines and graphics cards. We will examine current options in the market.
It is becoming clear to Vico’s customers that the CIO must be at the heart of the construction BIM strategy. Without a clear understanding of how departmental silos can be connected and leveraged for the betterment of the company, it would be difficult for any BIM strategy to make it past modeling and clash detection. And there is so much more to BIM than just 3D models. Models do not involve an IT strategy, but seamlessly connecting all departments using BIM as the enabling technology is – and that’s a powerful advantage for the company brand.
This webinar is for you and your firm if:
1. Your BIM strategy has been hamstrung by resistance to change and the need to run parallel processes for comfort;
2. You understand that BIM is not a point solution, but rather an enterprise solution connecting all the departments in your firm;
3. You want to learn about the technologies that are in play today to connect it all together – seamlessly – without manual linking and glue-ware;
4. You understand that BIM is technology plus process change and want your CIO to play a key role in its success.
Join us for this pivotal discussion and learn how your firm can deploy BIM without stumbling.
