What You Need to Know Today about Seismic BIM
In a recent New York Times article, Disaster Awaits Cities in Earthquake Zones, the reporter outlined cities whose population growth has outpaced the building codes. In many cases, the buildings would simply buckle with the force of the earthquake. But the true danger comes with the unsecured MEP systems, with live electricity, hazardous fluids and gases.
Hospitals in California know this reality first-hand. But with aggressive legislation, OSHPD regulations have made these hospitals some of the safest in the world. By properly bracing MEP systems against the rolling and jarring seismic activity, the hospitals are able to remain operational, and avoid loss of emergency power after a seismic event. As you can imagine, this bracing technology also works to protect buildings and their occupants from further damage in bomb blasts. So many building types like airports, government facilities, emergency centers, and police stations benefit from similar codes.
In this special edition of Fridays with Vico, we’ll introduce you to our partner, ISAT. Typically supports for piping, trays, and other equipment are designed for gravitational or vertical loads. But they do not take into account the horizontal loading caused by earthquakes or blasts. The solution is seismic restraints - braces which resist these horizontal forces to keep the systems in place and secure.
Coordinating code-specific bracing between multiple trades can be a difficult proposition. But in this webinar, we’ll learn the multidisciplinary methodology for coordinating design, code, and layout.
The workflow consists of four steps: Design coordination, Seismic bracing and hanger engineering, subcontractor optimization and layout and installation.
Design Coordination. Constructability issues can mire MEP coordination. But we’ve developed a unique system priority structure concept to assign precedence to critical systems. And by working with BIM models, visualization speeds the process.
Seismic Bracing and Hanger Engineering. When the bracing deign is finished a point load document is generated from the model. This document is then delivered to the structural engineer for approval and bracing documents are added to the coordination set. The fully detailed and coordinated set of documents is then sent to the subcontractor.
Subcontractor Optimization. The subcontractors receive the documents and after reviewing the proposed design, they suggest cost saving changes optimized for their processes. With the subs’ suggestions incorporated, an optimized set of documents is generated. A location-based package including the final coordinated drawings, bracing drawings, and location-based bracing buckets is sent to the subcontractors.
Layouting and Installation. Utilizing the integration with the Trimble LM 80, we extract all the embed placement points from the model and load them into a robotic Total Station. The Total Station can then be used by the subcontractors to precisely position all of the embeds into the formwork prior to pour.
