Architectural and Structural Modeling
Constructor 2009 fully exploits the benefits of today’s standard multi-core processors during the most frequently used BIM modeling and documentation operations; such as creating 3D views, sections, and elevations; as well as panning and zooming in 2D on large floor plans and layouts.
New Hotlink Manager
The new user interface makes it easier to use and reuse standard modules in the project, and includes support for recursive updates, thus increasing update speeds.
“System Technology” - Enhanced Modeling
Constructor 2009 introduces new “System Technology” for modeling. This new functionality is based on a hierarchical structure which provides greater flexibility and better control over the Virtual Construction model and enables you to extract detailed quantities and element properties.
Partial Structure Display
Allows you to isolate specific parts of composite structures to obtain a focused 3D View.
Curtain Wall Modeling
The new Curtain Wall tool lets you easily model the façade systems in your project, and allows you to extract detailed quantities for the various components of the curtain wall system.
DWG 2008 Import
New capabilities include ‘ACIS import’, which converts 3D DWG elements to GDL objects, ‘Purge unused attributes’ and ‘transfer all layouts into the DWG model space’.

Structural Steel Profiler
Constructor 2009 includes a complete library of steel profiles. The library covers the steel profile libraries of more than 15 countries; including the USA and the United Kingdom, in addition to European standards.
Virtual Trace helps you to ensure that your construction model is accurately coordinated with all project drawings, and helps to eliminate design errors at any phase of a project. Using Virtual Trace you can select any document (including the 3D view) as an underlay “Reference View” of the active view.
Visual Compare greatly extends Virtual Trace functionality by enabling you to visually identify differences between the model and drawings. With this innovative solution, coordination becomes a natural part of the design process.
Interior Elevation Function
With this new feature, Constructor 2009 dramatically improves productivity by saving the time spent on tedious technical tasks. Create unfolded interior model views of even the most complex-shaped room in just a few clicks. With its auto-placement rules, interior elevations can be placed on a layout with a single drag and drop action.
Constructor 2009 includes MEP Modeler; a full, high-end, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing modeling module. With specification-driven routing, MEP modeler is accurate and very easy to use: Duct routes are automatically delimited by the components available from the specification library. MEP Modeler will allow you to connect and maintain connections as you modify your system routes into their coordinated locations, accurately place and communicate hanger and seismic bracing locations, and export the 3D centerlines of your systems your fabrication subcontractors will follow.
Increase productivity with the new Constructor 2009 MEP Modeler 3D editing capabilities. This feature will allow easy and fast editing of MEP elements; such as pipes and ducts and will dramatically improve your ability to effectively coordinate MEP systems in congested spaces.
Ductwork fittings are improved substantially, allowing you to modify custom reducers and bends to mimic the freedom of a sheet metal fabrication subcontractor.
Extensive Library of Equipment, Pipes and Ducts
Start modeling immediately using the extensive Constructor 2009 library of localized MEP equipment. This new feature ensures a quick start by enabling you to pull content from a prepared library.
The Hanger Tool increases model accuracy and level of detail by providing a quick and simple way to model pipe and duct hangers. Select the hanger type and bracing options from Constructor’s Library, define the placing point on the pipe or ductwork, and automatically get the hanger at the correct elevation. The hanger tool will also extend the connections of braces and all-thread rod to connect to the slab or steel above. Modifications can be made to the hangers after placement to avoid collisions and produce a coordinated model.
Specification Based Content and Modeling
Ensure “Design to Build” by basing your design on standard specifications. Constructor 2009 duct and pipe content libraries are all compatible with standard specifications. When defining a duct or pipe route, Constructor automatically applies parts that are available within the selected specification. This way, paths are automatically constrained based on the specified collection of parts.
Auto routing makes it easy to connect main ducts with equipment. Simply pick two points and the system will automatically establish a connection. The connection can then be optimized based on defined constraints (e.g. the number of bends).
Editing After Placement
Ducts and pipes placed in the model environment can be edited after placement. Move points in the system in the x, y, and z directions, or change the angle - the system automatically adjusts the run.
With Constructor’s new Constructability Manager your team can effectively track and monitor constructability issues. The constructability manager allows you to place markers in the model at locations where you find constructability issues and link it with location data, images, and description. The Constructability Manager information is included in the published 5D Presenter model, where users can track and monitor the status of constructability items.
5D Modeling and Quantity Take-Off
5D modeling with Constructor means connecting a Virtual Construction model to a database containing the information to support the estimating, scheduling, and controlling activities of a project. Constructor 2009 provides the functionality to organize and break down the information as required for each of these tasks, and introduces new functions to create the data structure for your project and to check the integrity of the model-based data.
Interactive Model Checker
The Interactive Model Checker allows you to scan your Constructor model and determine whether all the quantities that are needed for the connected estimating and scheduling data are available. The Interactive Model Checker helps you to identify missing quantities, correct Recipes and Methods, and find related model elements.
New WBS Manager
Get immediate feedback about the status of your model. The New WBS Manager provides feedback when a recalculation of quantities is required after making changes to the location structure or elements in the model. You can now also automatically create a WBS that contains all floor levels in your project.
Slabs and Roofs Edges
With a simple labeling feature, you can mark the sides of Slabs and Roofs and only extract the length of those sections that you need.
Live Connection to the Database
A parallel and synchronized workflow with Vico Estimator™ is ensured by a live connection to a common database. Changes and additions in the collection of Estimator’s cost Recipes are updated in the Constructor environment. The integrated database and project setup function make it easier to set up and maintain project-to-database connections.
Non-Destructive Element Splitting
This patent-pending technology increases 5D modeling power and productivity dramatically and enables fast, highly accurate analyses of construction scenarios. Non-Destructive Element Splitting™ enables users to define project construction zones as desired, and to get the correct quantities and scheduling information without the need to physically split elements.
Publish to 5D Presenter
Integrate, simulate, and present model progress, schedule, and cost in one view. Constructor 2009 synchronizes model, cost, and schedule data and generates a 5D Model. The 5D Model can then be published to a 5D Presenter simulation. The simulation is the ideal way to check for constructability issues, identify potentially hazardous scenarios in the schedule, track actual progress, and run an EV analysis.
Recipe Model Links
Enrich 3D model entities with construction Recipe data. Elements in the Virtual Construction model can be associated with costs by assigning a cost Recipe to them. The Recipe assignment is defined as a property in the element’s settings.
Recipe Link Checker
Increase accuracy and save time by easily identifying unassigned objects and defining links with the common database. This feature provides one location for filtering and selecting elements, and assigning and changing Recipe assignments.
Accelerate the modeling process and ensure model standardization using Favorites - a user-managed library of predefined Virtual Construction elements. Favorites settings can also contain the assigned Recipe: if an element is added to the model from the Favorites panel, the predefined Recipe is assigned automatically.
Estimating Search and Select
Ensure optimized manageability of the Virtual Construction elements included in the project. Searching for and selecting elements based on assigned Recipe properties is possible with the Estimating Search and Select function. Multi-line queries can be defined and saved for later use.
Quantities and Properties of Selection
This function provides excellent quantity take-off feedback at any moment during the Virtual Construction process. Quantities and properties extracted from elements in the Virtual Construction model can be analyzed before being published to the common database.
Support for Conditional Methods
This provides superior integration with Vico Estimator. The Conditional Methods functionality is supported by offering to select properties that are made available in Estimator. Selected properties are written into the common database and can be used with the Conditional Methods feature in Estimator.
Improved Task Manager
Allows you to store Task definitions for several project phases. This enables you to use the same 5D Model data for several project stages by pulling predefined tasks and mappings from your library. Making the transition from the ‘early phase’ schedule to the ‘construction phase’ can now be done in minutes.
Enriched Method-Task Mapping
Element information can now be included for each of the Recipes. This makes it easier to recognize the context of Methods, which allows for the quicker deployment of your 5D Model data in your schedule.
Update Schedule Information in the 5D Presenter model
If you only update your schedule and do not modify anything in your 3D Model, this new function saves you time and enables you to update just the schedule information in the 5D Presenter model. Updating your construction simulation becomes a matter of seconds, helping you to quickly analyze what-if schedule scenarios.
Vico Control Integration
The integration with Vico Control allows users to define Method-to-task mapping in Control’s “Bill of Quantities” mode. Additional Resources required for the project, introduced by mobilization and waiting time in the schedule, are synchronized with the cost of Resources in the estimate through the common database.
Data exchange with Primavera® P3 and MS Project®
Data can be exchanged with Primavera® P3™, as well as Microsoft® Project™. The connection transfers the Work Breakdown Structure and Tasks to the schedule. Schedule information (e.g. start and end dates) can be synchronized in Constructor to complete the 5D model.
Site Surveying Export
Constructor lets you place site surveying and benchmark points inside the model environment. After defining the location of the reference point, a data file can be saved for use in a Total Station, enabling you to build your project based on the coordinated construction model.
MEP Hangers and Braces Points
Enabling a even better ‘Design to Build’ process, the MEP Hanger object with Braces that you add to the model automatically contain a site survey point for each of the connections of braces to the slab.
Site Surveying Import
Easily compare “as-built” to “as-designed” scenarios, by importing survey points into the Virtual Construction model environment. This function lets site surveyors measure points on-site and bring them into the model through a data file that is imported into Constructor. The survey points are represented with a dedicated object for easy recognition.
