The Model Progression Specification 3.0
Many builders and Owners are familiar with the AIA’s E202 document. This protocol helps design teams, subs, and GCs work together so the BIM data they produce can be used downstream by the project team.
But many of you might not know that Vico originally developed this framework along with Webcor Builders. Webcor then further refined it with the help of the technology subcommittee of the IPD Task Force within the California Council of the AIA.
We call this methodology the Model Progression Specification – or MPS for short. The MPS defines the interaction between the Owner, Designer and Preconstruction Team as they migrate from the initial idea through the conceptual phase, on to the schematic, detail, and construction phases of a program. It provides the framework for an efficient written checklist evolving elements of the design from a very schematic level of detail to a high level of detail in terms of 3D geometry, cost, and time.
Since 2008, Vico has incorporated more project lessons and further refined processes; the latest version of the MPS – we call it MPS 3.0 - is used by Vico clients and is contained in the Vico Customer Success Plan. The MPS 3.0 is a systematic and templated approach to developing multiple models so that the information contained in each is relevant for visualization, coordination, cost planning, scheduling, production control, fabrication, and even facilities management.
See what’s new in the Model Progression Specification and how you can incorporate it in your 5D BIM practice.

This webinar is important for your team if:
1.) You want a repeatable process for working with different firms in your area to
provide BIM deliverables to Owners;
2.) You want your firm to take the lead role organizing and managing the models
for coordination, means and methods analysis, offsite fabrication, as well as
planning and estimating;
3.) You are developing a BIM strategy for your firm and are still questioning which
projects should be modeled and by whom;
4.) You have started to receive models from various project constituents but
you’re not sure on how to make them work together;
5.) You want to make sure you’re not wasting time and resources on your BIM
projects.
6.) You have had the experience of spending resources on a BIM only to find
that it couldn't help you address owner questions regarding design, cost,
and/or schedule.
BIM models are becoming more and more prevalent in commercial and institutional construction as Owners expect the latest technology to be used for their projects. But models can come from different sources (architects, engineers, GCs, and subs) and be authored by different software (ArchiCAD, Bentley, Revit, Tekla, and even SketchUp).
Who is responsible for harnessing these models and modelers? How do we ensure that each model is useful? We need more “I” in BIM, so how do we organize these activities before-during-and-after the project?
Put very simply, the Model Progression Specification is a language for owners, designers and builders that defines elements and tasks in a building construction process. Using the MPS the project team can standardize RFP's, budget reviews, and ensure that estimates of cost from conceptual to GMP are all consistent throughout the project team members.
The MPS methodology provides transparency for the owner, along with a control system over the design, cost, and schedule. The Contractor receives streamlined internal processes and meaningful communication between the office and the field. The Architect receives a clean guideline of expectations which they can use to develop the design.
Gather your team for this informative session, just one piece of the Vico BIM Path workshop series. Then consider whether or not you would like the complete workshop series for your firm.
