An Introduction to LBMS and LPS
Some GCs have separate initiatives for Lean and BIM. But the two practices actually work hand-in-hand. Both strive to streamline processes by eliminating waste and redundancy, remove risk from the construction project, and share relevant information across the project team.
This Fridays with Vico webinar will focus on the synergies between LBMS (Location-Based Management System) and LPS (Last Planner System), a tool developed by the Lean Construction Institute.

Both LBMS (which is embodied in Vico solutions for scheduling AND controlling the project) and LPS are based on the concept of pull scheduling. Pull scheduling relies on location availability and will only start new crews when there is a free space for them to work. There is only one way to manage this, though. The project team must employ a strict Location Breakdown Structure (LBS), crew productivity rates (both planned and actual), and quantities by location.
We will illustrate this scenario with a presentation and a software demonstration including the following lean construction techniques in Vico Control:
| • |
quantity derivations from the model geometry |
| • |
Location Breakdown Structure |
| • |
quantity-driven, location-based, resource and cost-loaded Phase Schedules |
| • |
look-ahead schedules with planned versus actual production to identify crew/task bottlenecks and help prevent cascading delays |
| • |
superintendent site walks with resolution back to accounting for subcontractor payments |
Our customers who have implemented the Vico scheduling solutions along with the social and collaborative processes of the Last Planner System have demonstrated that schedules are more accurate, trade flow is optimized, crew productivity increases, and this leads to shorter schedules without increasing risk.
You and your team will want to join this webinar if
| • |
You are interested in extending lean construction principles from preconstruction out to the jobsite; |
| • |
You want a more collaborative environment with subs which leads to better negotiating, more optimal commitment making and lower pricing; |
| • |
You want to learn how the combination of quantities by location and crew productivity rates can give you a resource-loaded schedule; |
| • |
You want to learn how major hospital construction projects like Cathedral Hill, Kaiser Oakland, and SF General are being organized with location-based management principles. |
Interest from Owners in these techniques is palpable, so take your first step by learning about them on Fridays with Vico.
