BIM Just Got Cooler. Way cooler!

Let’s face it – between Google Glass, 3D Skype, and interactive whiteboards, there has been some really cool consumer technology innovations recently.  In the construction space we’ve seen the Laybot (a robot conceived through joint collaboration between Trimble and DPR for laying out interior spaces) and the Model Progression Specification to finally provide a 5D BIM framework that is required for designers and contractors to share the same language.

On the next Fridays with Trimble webinar, we would like to introduce you to the next big innovation in construction: comparing 2D drawing sets, comparing versions of 3D models, and a hybrid mode for inserting 2D drawings into 3D models when checking for discrepancies. Need a visual?

contract design drawings

Here you can see we are checking the 3D model against the contract design drawings inside the BIM environment. The horizontal plane shows the architectural plan across the fourth floor of the model, in order to check the accuracy of the slab edges.  The vertical plane shows the west elevation laid across the front of the building, in order to check that the modeled façade matches the design façade. We make this final check prior to releasing the façade work for fabrication and to make sure that the 2D and 3D inputs are in synch.

You won’t want to miss this huge unveiling on the next Fridays with Trimble!

Last week our webinar featured a case study from Hoar Construction about their work to become VDC leaders.  They shared with us some statistics from a recent hospital project which should also ring true with your firm:

480 Architectural Drawings per release, including

• 29 Elevations

• 24 Sections

• 125 Interior Drawings including floor patterns, finish schedules, millwork, casework and interior elevations)

• 60 reflected ceiling plans

So, you have an average of 1,402 drawings per release and let’s say there were only 6 drawing releases throughout the design phase; that means that there were 8,412 drawings that defined the contract and the project, which doesn’t even include logistics, concrete, fabrication, and other useful drawings.

Now let’s start counting the BIMs you receive from the design team, the subs, from the engineers, from your own team of modelers.  Who on your team was checking all those drawings and all those models for changes?  We shouldn’t go there – should we?  Your head is already spinning.

Take two aspirin and watch this webinar.

Your entire team will want to watch the debut of Vico Office Document Controller to see:
• How to compare new versions of 2D drawings to the previous version to identify what
  has changed;
• How to compare new versions of the 3D models to the previous version to see what
  has changed;
• How to compare the 3D model to the 2D drawing – did the 3D model just become equal
  to the 2D contract documents?
• How to identify omissions and new pieces of the design in the office before you’re
  out in the field;
• How to confidently OK drawings for prefabrication knowing the decision is not going to
  come back to haunt you.
• How to sleep soundly at night knowing that the 3D model you used for location-based
  quantities, schedules, and estimates matches the official contract documents.

Even if you can’t make the designated date/time, take five minutes to register for the webinar now and you’ll automatically receive the link to watch the recorded webinar.
