Implementing Location-Based Scheduling and Production Control: Four Hospital Case Studies

Location-Based Management Systems (LBMS), the approach that powers Vico scheduling solutions, is a relatively new method for construction scheduling (even though the founding principles were used to build The Empire State Building in just 20 months!).  Currently there are many projects underway and several nearing completion that have adopted LBMS.  And so the Trimble VDC Services Team can report on the definitive results from this method of construction scheduling and production control.

For this webinar, we will focus on the competitive and rigorous hospital construction industry in California; delivering these projects on-time and on-budget is priority #1 for GCs around the state. We will look specifically at four hospital projects which deployed LBMS on their projects. If you are new to the approach, LBMS is turbo-charged CPM designed for continuous resource usage, leveraging calculated durations based on quantities per location, and harmonizing workflow at the rate at which crews can complete each location.

However, creating an optimal schedule is only half the challenge – the other half lies in managing to the schedule on-site.  We’ll examine these two crucial parts of the equation using four different hospital projects.

Implementing a new approach to scheduling and production control on high-pressure projects can be daunting. But many firms are rising to the challenge and succeeding. This webinar explores four new hospital campuses in California. We examine the challenges they faced, how they overcame them, and the project results.

Participants in this session will:

  • • Learn how to introduce new scheduling practices that focuses on continuous
      resource usage for project profitability;
  • • Learn the importance of having scheduling experts dialed into projects to help
      smooth the day-to-day hiccups;
  • • Learn best practices for data collection and forecast analysis for project
      management;
  • • Learn how to spot potential schedule disruptions from the forecast and apply
      optimization techniques to mitigate them;
  • • Learn how to communicate better with subcontractors and coach them on pace
      improvements rather than harping about start dates;
  • • Learn which reports and deliverables Owners appreciate most from this process
      (hint: it’s not a 600-page schedule summary).

Lessons learned from these complex hospital projects are useful on all types of construction projects around the globe. But the key is having management champions who believe there is a better way to build and deliver these projects, even if it involves introducing a short term disruptive technology on these high-value/high-visibility hospitals that will lead to long term results.

Everyone on your Planning and Operations Teams will want to see this, especially if you want to:

  • • Remove risk from your project schedule by applying LBMS optimization techniques;
  • • Manage Subs by productivity rates, not just start dates;
  • • Spot potential schedule conflicts before they occur and proactively solve the problem;
  • • Create highly visual simulations for subs and Owners alike;
  • • Optimize by evaluating the number of required crews on the jobsite for improved safety,
      logistics planning and insurance costs;
  • • Provide the Owner with cost- and resource-loaded schedules, cash curves, and other
      valuable reports.
