Coordination Resolution – A Lean Construction Approach to Clash Detection and Coordination
Clash detection is one of the first areas where Contractors truly embraced BIM. After all, identifying and resolving a clash on a computer screen is so much less expensive than resolving the problem on the jobsite. So even if your average clash is only $10,000, identifying and solving 200 upfront is a hefty savings for the project.
The only problem is that once we identify a clash and start working to fix it, we create two additional clashes for other systems. So if we have 200 clashes to start with, by the time we’re done, we will have solved 600 clashes. That doesn’t sound too efficient.
What if we could apply Lean Construction principles to the coordination process and reduce the time spent by 40%? That’s exactly what we did. Vico’s Coordination Resolution Service is a Lean approach to clash detection. We work on one system at a time, moving elements only within building code parameters, and handing over only the most difficult clashes to subs.
As with all Vico Services, we work under the guidelines of Six Sigma so our efforts are streamlined and effective. Learn more about our Coordination Resolution protocols and best practices on the next Fridays with Vico webinar.

We will show examples from our Coordination Resolution work across multiple project types so you can better understand its place in your construction practice. This webinar is meant for you and your team if:
1.) The project team is willing to Quality Check the BIM Models (as we saw on
the Quality Assurance and Refinement Webinar) or build your own from the
drawing set;
2.) You want bring all the Subs to the conference room to explain that 75%+ of the
detailed coordination will be completed during the design stage;
3.) You’ll learn how to lead the discussion, process change, and negotiations from
an expert Vico Project Manager;
4.) The project team agrees to the Rules of Change document and System Priority
Structure which the expert Modeler will use during the coordination.
And, of course, we would recommend that if you are going to coordinate the models properly that you should go the extra step and do the quantity takeoff by location for construction scheduling and estimating. We have many archived episodes of Fridays with Vico which you can review to learn more about 4D and 5D.
Come learn how to make your coordination practices more streamlined and efficient with Vico’s Coordination Resolution Service.
