4D BIM Scheduling with Vico Office
We recently had a question on a LinkedIn Construction Group that went right to the heart of the current discussion on model-based scheduling.
The question was, “In 20 words, what does 4D BIM mean to Vico?” The off the cuff answer is, “It sure isn’t a movie!” But our customers and clients would answer simply: 4D BIM scheduling is comprised of 4 components: quantities by location, flowline theory, on-site production control, and 4D simulations. And that’s just 19 words.
We’ve already had webinars which focused on location-based management, our location breakdown structure application, and even on flowline theory. So this Fridays with Vico webinar will focus on creating and optimizing the plan with Schedule Planner and then managing the schedule on-site with Production Controller. And, of course, we’ll see that 4D Manager, with its multiple simulations of the project by trades, is the perfect vehicle for communicating that schedule with Subs.

Since we have already explained the quantities by location portion in our last webinar on LBS Manager, let’s jump ahead…
Flowline scheduling: this scheduling method centers around uninterrupted work flow for trades and works hand-in-hand with locations. Vico Schedule Planner is a scientific derivation of the BIM model geometry for quantities, combined with locations and crew productivity rates. Using flowline theory, Schedule Planner optimizes the construction schedule by at least 10%.
On-site production control: BIM doesn’t stay at HQ – it heads out to the jobsite with the Superintendent to manage the schedule and oversee crew progress. Calculating an optimal construction schedule is one thing, but controlling the project on-site with Vico Production Controller is what makes an A Player. Measuring work put in place by location and comparing actuals to planned helps Supers see potential problems and conflicts far in advance. Now the team can work together to solve the scheduling conflict and avoid cascading delays.
