Applecross Properties Ltd.
Queen Margaret Drive Project
Vico Software's 5D technology allowed Applecross to identify and solve 185 constructability issues in the pre-construction stage in order to eliminate on-site errors.
Aims to redevelop a 5.3 acre site in the heart of Glasgow’s west end, this mixed use project includes a significant new development combined with conversion of buildings, with a total gross floor area of approximately 285,000 sq ft.
Challenges
Operating within a tight budget and time frame, this project also involves the conservation of landmark buildings. In such a sensitive venture, efficient co-ordination and communication between all parties is crucial. To attain the desired levels of quality and meet deadlines, Applecross seeks to identify constructability issues early and enhance the planning process by employing location based scheduling techniques.
Solution
In meeting the demands of the QMD project, Applecross sought a complete
system solution. Vico’s integrated 5D software suite provided the comprehensive set of tools they were looking for. No less important, Vico’s construction service team has enabled Applecross to enjoy immediate productivity. To bring together designers,
constructors and owner representatives, Applecross adopted a ‘one-room’
environment. Granting design and construction teams constant access to updated, accurate information, it allows for informed – and immediate – decision-making. Likewise, Vico‘s 5D software enables quick and accurate control of design changes, as well as trades coordination, resulting in increased predictability and confidence
in the project plan’s viability.
Benefits
Improved project co-ordination is an immediate benefit of the 5D technology, according to Pierre Puyrigaud, Applecross’ Pre-Production Director. The system lets users build projects virtually in 3D, link them to cost and scheduling systems, and simulate the construction process. This means improved cost rationalisation and forecasting, and better and more realistic scheduling. “In terms of long-term cost savings, we are targeting a 5% reduction as the result of this technology," says Pierre. Driven largely by the desire to maintain excellence, while reducing costs and project schedules, Applecross has decided to use the Vico 5D system in-house for its future projects.
